SHIFT workers are clocking on with a charity effort to raise money in memory of a much-missed colleague. Staff at the Home Delivery Network (HDN) depot in Blackpole Trading Estate have organised an annual football match to raise money for charity.
The kickabout at Worcester City Football Club’s ground is to remember Caroline Powell, who worked in the depot’s customer care department and died last year after succumbing to complications from liver disease. Organisers have decided money raised from the event will go to the British Liver Trust in her memory.
Allan Bodily, co-organiser and warehouse operative, said the game was the chance for people to get together for a good cause.
“My partner was good friends with Caroline, so it’s a cause close to our heart, and many people knew her,” he said.
“And on top of that, it’s something we enjoy doing every year.
“It always pays off, because last time round we raised £650 for charity.”
The game will see two squads of 18 players from the morning and afternoon shifts at HDN tackling each other for the right to raise the David Goodfellow Memorial Trophy, named after another former colleague.
The clash will be watched by workers, their families, friends and fans at Worcester City Football Club ground at St George’s Lane, with kick- off at 11am on Good Friday. Entry is free.
Money will be raised through player fees, programme sales and selling football cards while managers on the late shift are putting in money from their own pockets.
“It brings all the staff together, always provokes plenty of banter in the warehouse and helps take a bit of stress out of work,” added Mr Bodily, of Blackpole. “But everyone is welcome to come along. I’ve put posters up. It’ll be a good game. “I’m sitting it out though. At 47 years old, I’ll let the youngsters run around instead.”
